PONTIAN: There was a lot of hype that Barisan Nasional might also announce its candidate for the Tanjung Piai by-election on Monday (Oct 28) but it quickly fizzled out when no names were announced.
Barisan chairman Datuk Seri Dr Zahid Hamidi only said the candidate would be a local and the name would be announced by Johor Umno chief Datuk Hasni Mohammed.
He added that it was important for everyone to work together as a team to win the seat from Pakatan.
Dr Zahid, who was here to launch the Barisan election machinery, also formally welcomed Johor PAS commissioner Abdullah Husin, who was seated on stage.
This will be the first time Umno and Pas will be working together to win in an election.
Dr Zahid also reminded everyone against internal sabotage and to support whoever is fielded as the Barisan candidate.
There was no clear indication if the candidate would be from MCA or Umno.
Meanwhile, Hasni said in his speech that Barisan had tricked Pakatan into believing that the announcement would be made on Monday (Oct 28).
"They were tricked by us and announced their candidate at 2.00pm today when they found out we were going to announce ours at 4.00pm.
"They were initially going to announce their candidate on Oct 30 but changed it to an earlier date when they found out that we were supposed to announce ours today," he said.
It was earlier reported that Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) has named its Tanjung Piai division chief Karmaine Sardini as its candidate for the by-election while lawyer S. Wendy is tipped to be the Gerakan candidate.
The Election Commission has set Nov 2 as the nomination day and Nov 16 as the polling day for the parliamentary by-election.
The by-election was triggered after its MP Dr Md Farid Md Rafik, 42, died of heart complications on Sept 21.
