Umno postpones AGM to focus on Tanjung Piai by-election

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has postponed its annual general meeting (AGM) to December to avoid clashing with the upcoming Tanjung Piai by-election on Nov 16.

Its president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the AGM, initially planned for Nov 13 to Nov 16, will now be held on Dec 4 to Dec 7 instead.

"We have discussed about the AGM which coincides with the Tanjung Piai by-election so we decided on a new date, whereby the AGM will be held from Dec 4 to Dec 7.

"The whole machinery of Umno and Barisan Nasional will be concentrated in Tanjung Piai," said Zahid after chairing the Umno supreme council meeting at the Putra World Trade Centre here on Thursday (Oct 3).

On Wednesday (Oct 2), Umno's component party partner in Barisan Nasional, MCA, announced that it will also be postponing its AGM slated for Nov 2 to avoid clashing with the by-election's Nomination Day.

The Election Commission announced on Tuesday (Oct 1) that the Tanjung Piai by-election has been fixed for Nov 16, with the Nomination Day on Nov 2 and early voting on Nov 12.

The Tanjung Piai by-election was called after the seat fell vacant following the death of incumbent Datuk Dr Md Farik Md Rafik on Sept 21.

In the 14th General Election last year, Dr Md Farid of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia defeated Datuk Seri Wee Jeck Seng of MCA and Nordin Othman of PAS.
