KUALA LUMPUR: The Barisan Nasional candidate contesting in the Tanjung Piai by-election will be announced after negotiations between component parties and studies on the matter is completed.
Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic) said that he had held a discussion with MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong on the candidate, but the matter is still being studied.
"For Tanjung Piai, we will contest. The discussions and studies are being done and we will only make the announcement of the candidate that will represent Barisan Nasional after all studies and negotiations are completed.
"I have conducted a discussion with MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong and will announce the candidate in the nearest time," he said after chairing the Umno supreme council meeting at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) here on Thursday (Oct 3).
Ahmad Zahid also said that Umno would be sending representatives led by its secretary-general Tan Sri Annuar Musa to the "Kongres Maruah Melayu" (Malay Dignity Congress) on Sunday (Oct 6) at Stadium Malawati in Shah Alam.
"The decision for Umno to attend the event is based on respect for the organisers, which consist of public higher learning institutions such as Universiti Malaya, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Sultan Idris Education University and Universiti Putra Malaysia," he said.
Ahmad Zahid, who has two pre-scheduled national and state-level Umno events to attend on Sunday (Oct 6), will be giving the congress a miss.
The congress, which will discuss issues involving education, religion, culture, politics and the economy from a Malay perspective, is set to be officiated by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Other Malay leaders including PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang has also confirmed their attendance for the event.
