SERDANG: A human trafficking ring member was shot dead by police after he tried to ram his car into them.

The police had trailed the suspect’s car from Kelantan on Tuesday night, and finally cornered him at Jalan Pusat Bandar 9, Puchong.

However, as the team from Bukit Aman attempted to arrest the suspect, he became aggressive and tried to ram his car into an officer. Shots were fired in return, leading to his death.

The deceased suspect has been identified as 37-year-old Mohd Zafarul Nizam Hamzah.

“Upon inspecting the car, police found nine Myanmar nationals in it.

“The suspect had stopped his car at the location of the crime to meet with a middleman working for the syndicate. That was when the police team made their move.

“The deceased was found to have had 11 criminal records, mostly for theft and drug-related offences, ” said Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Noor Azam Jamaludin in a statement.

One of the nine foreigners was injured during the shootout.

The suspect suffered injuries to the shoulder and stomach, and is being treated at the Serdang hospital, said Comm Noor Azam.

“The car had been modified. The back seat had been removed to make it easier to smuggle foreigners, ” he said.

A female storekeeper near the scene of the shooting told The Star that she ran for her life after hearing gunshots.

“All I saw after that was the police approaching the car, with them shouting for those inside to get out, ” said the storekeeper.

Another bystander thought it was firecrackers when he heard the gunshots.
