PETALING JAYA: The Papar District health office is studying a "smoke candy" that is being consumed by students in SK Pekan, as concerns have been raised that it encourages children to smoke cigarettes.
On Monday (July 22), SK Pekan Papar Parent-Teacher Association head Mohd Fauzi Sahat said the district's health office has received complaints about the popular sweet known as Smoke Candy, or Ghost Candy.
He said the sweet is popular among children in Papar and is sold in stores in the town.
"Although the health effects of these sweets are still unknown, their ability to produce smoke seems to teach children how to smoke," he said.
He urged parents to monitor their children, especially those with children in Standard 5 and Standard 6.
"They are most likely to buy the sweets," he said.
A video showing three primary school boys in uniform eating the smoke candy is being circulated on social media.
It shows the boys putting the candy in their mouth and blowing white smoke similar to that made by a cigarette.
