KUCHING: Police must conduct a thorough investigation into the recent attacks on 24-hour convenience stores in Sarawak, says Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
The Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister said authorities should investigate the cases collectively to determine whether they were linked, and identify not only those involved but also anyone who may have planned or ordered the attacks.
"It is especially alarming that some of the incidents took place while people were still inside the premises. Knowing that there were people inside and still throwing dangerous objects into the shop is a blatant disregard for the law and human lives.
"This kind of gangster-style behaviour, using intimidation, arson, violence and acts that endanger lives to achieve an aim, must not be allowed to take root in Sarawak,” said Tiong, who is also Bintulu MP, in a statement on Thursday (Sept 24).
On Sept 21, Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said police were seeking suspects behind arson attacks on two convenience stores in Kuching and Sri Aman on Sept 20, in which objects believed to contain explosives or flammable materials were thrown into the premises.
Police had received two reports regarding the incidents, which had a similar modus operandi.
Mohamad Zainal said the motive was still under investigation and that the cases were being investigated under Section 436 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire or an explosive substance. – Bernama
