Anwar: I know what it's like to be a victim of slander

PETALING JAYA: Being a victim of slander is not something one would wish on other people, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The PKR president said he himself had lost a lot back when he was slandered.

"I've long been slandered over the years. I've lost many friends and time with my loved ones. It's not something that you want for others.

"Let's ponder upon the world today and ensure that we will not be caught in the act of sharing without thinking or craft things that will lead to slander," he said in an Instagram post on Friday (June 14)

Anwar, who was charged with sodomy twice before, said attempts to destroy unity could only be halted by having integrity and principles.

He added that it was unfortunate slander was becoming a norm in Malaysian politics.

"When they fail to bring someone down through policy and principles, then slander and lies become their choice.

"Repeat, repeat, repeat ... Then it becomes the 'truth', especially in the age of social media and fake news," he said.

On Thursday, Anwar reiterated PKR's rejection of the gutter politics levelled against its deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, who has been implicated in a sex video scandal.

The party was mired in scandal when a video purportedly of Azmin and Santubong PKR youth chief Muhammad Haziq Abdul Aziz having sex went viral.

Haziq made a confession that it was him and Azmin in the video, with the latter slamming the allegation as a nefarious plot to end his political career.

A post shared by Anwar Ibrahim (@anwaribrahim_my) on
