KUCHING: The development of a deep-sea port and supporting industries at Tanjung Embang near here will anchor Sarawak's transformation beyond 2030, says Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.
The Sarawak Premier said the development will embrace new technology in port management to achieve faster turnaround times and seamless operations.
"The port will use technology for the transaction of documents. Before the ship berths, the documents are ready.
"That means a lot of high standards and international compliance for Tanjung Embang," he said at Sarawak Energy Bhd's (SEB) vendor excellence awards on Wednesday (July 8) night.
Abang Johari said a high-tech area had also been identified in Tanjung Embang for supporting entities, including a data and AI campus.
In addition, a new international airport will be developed at Tanjung Embang to boost connectivity and the aviation industry.
"The Asian Development Bank is interested in participating in the development of Tanjung Embang through green financing.
"The development will take at least 15 years and be a pathway for us to be a regional port in Asean," he added.
Meanwhile, SEB group chief executive officer Datuk Sharbini Suhaili said the company remained committed to operating in accordance with internationally recognised standards and best practices.
"We expect that every project must be delivered safely, responsibly, efficiently and with full respect for environmental obligations," he said.
To date, SEB has approved more than RM139mil under its vendor development and vendor financing programmes, enabling local businesses to build their capabilities and expand their participation in Sarawak’s growing energy industry.
Fourteen vendors were recognised under the Vendor Appraisal and Awards in six categories.
One project partner received the contractor environmental impact assessment compliance award, while three contractors received gold awards for outstanding health, safety and environment performance.
