ALOR GAJAH: Firefighters racing to rescue a teacher and three students after a road crash in Solok Duku in Masjid Tanah here had to deal with another disturbing situation when irresponsible individuals allegedly tried to take the cash and personal belongings of the injured teacher at the scene.
The four victims were travelling home after taking part in a state-level table tennis championship when the car they were in was involved in an accident with a lorry at about 3.24pm on Wednesday (July 8).
Melaka Fire and Rescue Department Zone Two chief Zulkhairani Ramli said the department received an emergency call at 3.24pm involving both vehicles.
He said the 24-year-old teacher and a 16-year-old student were seriously injured after being trapped in the car.
Zulkhairani said two other students, aged 15 and 16, suffered a fractured leg and other injuries. These two victims were earlier taken out by members of the public before the rescue team arrived.
Zulkhairani said the 46-year-old lorry driver escaped unhurt.
“My team managed to extricate the two trapped victims before all the injured victims were rushed to the hospital,” he added.
He said the operation involved six personnel from the Masjid Tanah Fire and Rescue Station and ended at 4.38pm after firefighters ensured the scene was safe.
Zulkhairani said the rescue operation was also marred by the actions of irresponsible individuals who were believed to have attempted to take cash and personal belongings from the injured teacher.
However, he said the swift action of firefighters prevented the attempt before the belongings of the victim were secured and handed over to the police for further action.
He said firefighters were trained not only to save lives during emergencies, but also to protect victims and ensure their belongings were not taken advantage of at accident scenes.
