SIBU: A Chinese national has been arrested for allegedly cheating a middle-aged local woman of her jewellery worth RM20,000.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said the incident happened on March 9 in Jalan Mahsuri, where the victim met the 46-year-old suspect who claimed that her eldest child would die in an accident unless an "offering" was made.

"The victim was brought into a car. While inside, the suspect told her that her eldest child will die at 5pm that day. The suspect said she was a medium and could perform a prayer to save her eldest child," he added.

The victim subsequently surrendered her gold necklace, three bracelets, three rings and two earrings as prayer offerings to the suspect.

The suspect then gave her a black plastic bag, said to contain her jewellery and told her to open the bag only after two months.

"When she opened the plastic bag, she was shocked to find two bottles of mineral water and a pack of salt," he added.

Then on May 12, two months after the incident, the victim spotted the suspect at about 8am at the same place.

With the help of her nephew, they arrested her and handed her to the police.

Video clips of the suspect being surrounded by the public in a coffee shop in Jalan Chiew Siik Hiong, opposite Jalan Mahsuri had gone viral.

ACP Stanley said the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
