Stephen Wong to be laid to rest in Sandakan on April 1

KOTA KINABALU: The late Datuk Stephen Wong Tien Fatt will be flown back to his hometown of Sandakan on Saturday (March 30), where he will be laid to rest.

A two-day wake service will be held over the weekend at the San Fook Hing Funeral Parlour to allow mourners to pay their last respects to the two-term Sandakan MP and Sabah DAP chairman.

A funeral service has been scheduled for 8am Monday (April 1) at the Tiong Hua Secondary School, after which Wong will be laid to rest at the Sandakan Christian Burial Ground along Mile 12 off Labuk Road.

Sabah DAP acting chairman Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung said local and peninsular leaders, including Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, Primary Industries Minister Teresa Kok and DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang are expected to arrive in Sabah soon to pay their respects.

Wong, 64, who was also the state Health and People’s Wellbeing Minister, collapsed in his car after a hike at the Tambaig Adventure Park in Kg Duvanson, Putatan, near here on Thursday (March 28).

He was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s emergency unit, where he was pronounced dead at 12.15pm.

Wong leaves behind his wife, Chong Mee Fook, three daughters and a son.
