PETALING JAYA: Permatang Pauh lawmaker Nurul Izzah Anwar has quit Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
In a brief text message on Friday (March 22), Nurul Izzah confirmed that she has resigned from the PAC while Parliament sources have confirmed that she has submitted her resignation letter to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof’s office.
However, when contacted, Mohamad Ariff said: “No letter has been brought to my notice. It might be prudent to check with YB Nurul directly.”
Nurul Izzah had spoken out before on the government’s move to retain the PAC chair.
The lawmaker had tweeted on March 15 that the position of the PAC chairman must be filled by the Opposition to pursue accountability of the Executive.
“The current Speaker has clearly outlined intent to institutionalise reforms -to ensure Parliament is on equal footing to the Executive.
“Will remind him to do so for the PAC,” she tweeted.
Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had said that PAC chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee need not resign from his post after joining Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia recently.
Last December, Nurul Izzah who announced that she would resign from her PKR party posts, however said she would remain a member of the parliamentary backbench committed to reforms.
She also said she would no longer serve in the federal government in any capacity.
