PETALING JAYA: Nothing is more empowering than literally being able to defend yourself from assailants.

And there is no one better qualified than former Malaysian mixed-martial arts (MMA) queen Ann “Athena” Osman to show women the moves to ward off attacks.

Join Ann at the WOW! Fiesta tomorrow (March 16) at The Starling Mall in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, where she will be conducting a self-defence session.

Ann who was the first Malaysian woman to have fought professionally at the MMA ONE Championship, said it is important for women to learn how to defend themselves in any situation.

“We are exposed to unknown risks each day. Learning self-defence teaches us how to keep alert. It helps build confidence too,” said Ann, 33, who was inspired to learn martial arts after a road bullying incident years ago.

Ann, who picked up martial arts in her 20s, encourages women to sign up for self-defence courses as it keeps them physically and mentally stronger.

“Learning anything from scratch isn’t easy. You need to believe in yourself and have the spirit of determination and patience. You need to put in the hard work,” she said.

Ann will be demonstrating useful self-defence techniques for women in a one-hour workshop titled, “Self Defense Through Martial Arts”, at 3.15pm on March 16.

The WOW! Fiesta, held this weekend, is the highlight of Star Media Group’s WOW – Women do Wonders campaign to celebrate women.
