Man, 68, detained after 395 reports lodged against him for allegedly insulting Islam


PETALING JAYA: The police have arrested a man following nationwide reports lodged against him for allegedly posting comments insulting Islam.

"The police have received 395 police reports from all over Malaysia following the post," said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun.

He added that acting on information they received, the police arrested a 68-year-old Malaysian who had uploaded the post on Facebook.

"The suspect has been remanded until Feb 22 to assist investigations," he said in a statement Wednesday (Feb 20).

Mohamad Fuzi added that the suspect was being investigated under Section 298A of the Penal Code, for causing disharmony and ill will on the grounds of religion.

The suspect is also to be investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.

"The police would like to remind the public to not abuse social media or any form of communications by uploading or sharing provocative items that touch on racial and religious sensitivities," he said.
