SIBU: Police are looking for two men seen on a screen grab from a CCTV that caught them trying unsuccessfully to break open a bank ATM machine here.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said on Friday (Feb 8) that the incident happened at 6.30am on Feb 5 but the bank was only aware of the matter an hour later after being informed by its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur that one of its ATMs was malfunctioning.

"After going through the CCTV footage, a man wearing a helmet was seen trying to open the ATM machine using sharp objects.

"When that failed, he lighted firecrackers to try to blow up the machine. But that again was not successful," ACP Stanley said.

The suspect was eventually assisted by an accomplice who was not wearing a helmet.

ACP Stanley said acting on information, the investigating officer and team went to the scene to conduct a check.

According to ACP Stanley, the bank only lodged a police report two days after the incident.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code for causing mischief using an explosive item.
