JASIN: An expectant mother was among three killed in an accident involving two cars at the Alor Gajah-Melaka Tengah-Jasin Highway.
Ezaini Abu Bakar, 34, who was seven months pregnant, succumbed to head injuries.
Her husband Mohd Fairuz Haron, 34, who was drivng, was also killed, in the accident at 9pm on Sunday.
The couple’s eldest daughter Nurul Fatiha Adelia, seven, and her three-year-old brother Muhammad Amirul Asyraf were injured.
Nurul Fatiha is now being treated at Melaka Hospital’s intensive care unit while Muhammad Amirul is also warded in the same hospital for observation.
The family were returning from Batu Pahat after visiting Ezaini’s parents and elder brother who were scheduled to leave for pilgrimage to Mecca today.
The driver of the other car, Lee Boon Yong, 22, died on the spot while his passenger Siah Shi Yang, 21, sustained minor injuries.
Jasin OCPD Deputy Supt Arshad Abu said Lee, who was travelling from Melaka to Muar,had lost control of his car and swerved to the opposite side of the road before the cars collided.
DSP Arshad said the accident caused an eight-hour bottleneck from Muar to Melaka and Fire and Rescue Department personnel took about 40 minutes to remove the bodies.
He added the accident is being probed under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
