Anwar is pleased and humbled by PD polls result

PORT DICKSON: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says he is pleased and humbled by the result of the by-election here, following support by Malaysians from all walks of life.

The PKR president-elect said that his victory is a political milestone and a vote of confidence for the Pakatan Harapan government and its reform agenda.

"What is astounding to me is because we have managed to garner favourable support from all ethnic groups," he said to reporters during a press conference at Pakatan's operations centre here on Saturday (Oct 13).

He said he was looking forward to his swearing-in ceremony as the Port Dickson MP in Parliament on Monday (Oct 15).

"I will focus on my work assisting our leaders in Parliament ensure we embark on all effective parliamentary reforms and I'm sure I will get full support from my colleagues," he said.

He said that he had called Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad about his victory, and thanked all parties in the Pakatan coalition for assisting his campaign.

"Dr Mahathir was extremely pleased with the results and I'm thankful for his support and endorsement, together with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, DAP, PKR and the Pati Amanah Negara leadership.

"I must also personally mention my appreciation to Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who took the trouble to come and campaign despite his health problems," he added.

At the same time, Anwar also expressed appreciation towards the armed forces, saying that the results shown that support by them towards Pakatan has increased.

He also pledged to fulfil all his promises made to Port Dickson voters.

"I have mentioned a few programs and promises, I will discuss this with the Negri Sembilan Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun," he added.

Anwar won the seat with a whopping 23,560-vote majority, surpassing the 17,710-vote majority obtained by the previous MP Datuk Danyal Balagopal during GE14 despite a higher 82.8% voter turnout.
