KUALA TERENGGANU: The Fire and Rescue Department will conduct an in-depth investigation into the drowning of six of its men in a disused mining pool in Taman Putra Perdana, Selangor.
The department's deputy director general (operations) Datuk Soiman Jahid said investigators will look at the tragedy from every angle and urged the public not to make any baseless speculation.
A full report on the tragedy can be expected within two weeks, he told pressmen at the East Coast Fire and Rescue Department Academy in Wakaf Tapai, Marang on Thursday (Oct 4).
He was in Terengganu to attend a national marching competition held at the academy.
Soiman said the rescue team had considered every possibility in the search and rescue operation for a teenager who had fallen into the pool.
However, he said that changing currents, which led to complications and eventually the six deaths, compromised the operation.
He also said that all six personnel were trained divers with the department's water rescue team (PPDA) and were capable of handling water rescue missions.
The victims are Mohd Fatah Hashim, 34; Izatul Akma Wan Ibrahim, 32; Mazlan Omarbaki, 25, and Yahya Ali, 24, all from the Port Klang Fire and Rescue Station, while the other two, Adnan Othman, 33, and Muhammad Hifdzul Malik Shaari, 25, were from the Shah Alam Fire and Rescue Station.
Their remains have been sent to their respective hometowns for burial.
On Wednesday (Oct 4), the team were searching for Mohd Ilham Fahmy Mohd Azzam, 17, who had fallen into the disused mine while fishing at around 5pm.
His body was found at around 5.45pm on Thursday (Oct 4).
