SHAH ALAM: Malays should start to question themselves on where they have gone wrong and think of ways to better themselves, says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman said under the New Economic Policy (NEP), Malays had many opportunities and assistance to be successful in businesses and entrepreneurship.

He said the success of the NEP was, however, “very small and unsatisfying”.

“The question is what is the reason for the NEP, despite its affirmative actions, to fail in achieving its aim?

“If we admit that we are wrong, then we must correct our mistakes,” he said in his speech at the party’s second anniversary celebrations in Stadium Malawati yesterday.

Dr Mahathir singled out some of them, including “not working as hard as others”.

“Not only that, we also do not take responsibility and are less cautious before making decisions and taking actions,” he said.

Dr Mahathir, who is also Prime Minister, said now that Pakatan Harapan and PPBM is the government, there would be measures to ensure that the Malays would not be left behind and the economic gap bet-ween them and other races be further reduced.

“We will create policies, opportunities and have facilities for Malays to improve their performance.

“But this time we will ensure that whatever is given to the Malays is not misused by them.

“We will ensure they are trained to manage, especially with money, and action will be taken against any abuse,” he said.
