Six pupils rushed to hospital in aftermath of ammonia leak (updated)

SHAH ALAM: Six pupils from a school near the site of a recent ammonia leak were rushed to hospital Thursday (Aug 16) morning after they experienced nausea.  

The Shah Alam Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call at 7.04am, and a Hazmat team was rushed to SMJK (C) Chong Hwa.  

A spokesman said the ammonia level in the area was still under control.  

"An early reading indicated that the ammonia level was 10 ppm (parts per million) which is safe and below the 30 ppm permissible level cut off point."  

On Monday (Aug 13), an ammonia leak at an ice factory claimed the lives of two foreign workers and injured at least 18 people who received emergency medical treatment.  

The ammonia level in the mishap was 500 ppm - way above the normal reading of 50 ppm and below.  

According to the spokesman, the ice factory operator has not been operating since the incident.
