Move to abolish GST may be tabled on Monday

REPORTS by MARTIN CARVALHO, HEMANANTHANI SIVANANDAM, RAHIMY RAHIM and LOSHANA K SHAGAR

A motion to abolish the Goods and Services Tax could be tabled in Dewan Rakyat as early as next Monday.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong briefly confirmed the matter when pressed by reporters at the Parliament lobby yesterday.

A Bill for the implementation of the Sales and Service Tax (SST), which will take over from the GST, is also expected to be tabled next week.

“Of course we have to do it at this meeting, because the SST comes into effect on Sept 1,” said Liew, who is in charge of legal affairs.

Asked on the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma), Liew said that fell under the purview of the Home Ministry.

“So, they have to draw up a memorandum for the repeal.”

Asked if the Anti Fake News Act would also be repealed and what the obstacles were, Liew simply said the matter was being discussed.

“As I said before, I have prepared the memorandum and it will be submitted to Cabinet for approval,” he said.

“I think it will not meet any resistance.”
