41-year-old Malaysian weds 11-year-old girl in Thailand

PETALING JAYA: An underage girl has wedded a man 30 years her senior as his third wife in Gua Musang, Kelantan.

It is learnt that the 41-year-old man went to Golok, a border town in southern Thailand to have the marriage solemnised with the 11-year-old girl.

The man, who already has two wives and six children, is said to be the imam of a surau at a village there.

His children are said to be between five and 18 years old and one of them is even friends with the girl.

The girl and her parents are Thai nationals but they are living in Gua Musang as the parents are working as rubber tappers there.

The matter became viral when his second wife posted photographs of the man and the young girl and their alleged solemnisation with the caption: “Selamat pengantin baru suamiku. Suami 41, Maduku 11 (Congratulations on your wedding, my husband. Husband 41, Another wife 11)”.

The post has since been taken down. She uploaded another post, saying that she has referred the matter to the courts, the ustaz and the Social Welfare Department.

It is learnt that the department had gone to the village to investigate the matter.

Meanwhile, the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry will be issuing a statement regarding the matter soon.
