Dr Mahathir accorded state welcome at Indonesia's Istana Bogor

JAKARTA: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has been accorded a state welcome by the Indonesian government at Istana Bogor here on Friday (June 29).

It was a repeat of the state welcome he received 24 years ago when Muhammad Suharto was president, but this time the person welcoming him was President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

As Dr Mahathir and wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah arrived at the palace compound some 60km from here, they were accompanied by the Calvary Brigade Detachment of the Indonesian Army, and were greeted by Jokowi and his wife Iriana at the main building.

Dr Mahathir then inspected the honour guard mounted by the presidential security force and was later invited by Jokowi for what has been termed as a “verandah talk” - a media photo opportunity.

The two leaders then proceeded to plant a meranti tree sapling to commemorate Dr Mahathir’s official visit.
