Pulau Jerejak development gets go-ahead

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has given the go-ahead to the developer in Pulau Jerejak to demolish existing building structures to make way for development on the island.

Mayor Yew Tung Seang (pic) said the developer Tropical Island Sdn Bhd has been given planning permission with conditions to carry out the project.

"It's still in early stages as there are number of conditions attached which would need to be carried out after the demolition of the structures are completed," said Yew in press conference at City Hall after a full council meeting on Thursday.

There have been objections from Gerakan and several NGOs to the development on the island saying that it would effect the forest reserve land.

It was earlier reported that the developer would develop 32.3ha of land into world class resorts and residences.

One of the conditions of the planning permission is that the development should not encroach into the forest reserve on the island.
