Teruntum incumbent wary of rookie opponent

KUANTAN: The Pakatan Harapan incumbent assemblyman for Terun­tum, Sim Chon Siang (pic), is not taking it easy despite facing a first-timer.

“My chances are still 50-50 because of the three-cornered fight,” said Sim, 52.

His contenders are Barisan Na­­sional political greenhorn Tee Choon Ser, 37, and PAS’ Azizah Mohd Ali, a 66-year-old retired civil servant.

Sim was quick to acknowledge that Tee had gained experience in politics as she was a special assistant to former Terun­tum assemblyman Datuk Chang Hong Seong.

Tee had also served as a councillor for the Kuantan Munici­pal Council since 2015, he added.

“So, she (Tee) has been involved in politics for some time. The people can compare our services over the last few years and choose for themselves.

“My goal is still the same this time: to fight for a greener town, put an end to the Lynas issue and help the people solve other problems in Kuantan,” Sim said.

In GE13, he won the seat by a majority of 4,437 votes against MCA’s Chang.

Meanwhile, Tee hoped her work as a councillor was a good preparation for her debut in GE14.

“My first step will be to increase security by introducing more CCTVs at the entrances of housing areas to prevent crime,” she said.

She added that she also hoped to upgrade facilities at Taman Gelora and Pasar Besar.

She said she would also focus on women’s affairs, highlight issues such as breast cancer awareness and set up one-stop centres to help young people who wanted to start online businesses.
