Rep: No 'health scare' in Miri

MIRI: Senadin state assemblyman Datuk Lee Kim Shin has refuted claims of an outbreak of diseases in Miri City following two different health memos being circulated on social media.

Lee, who is also state assistant tourism minister, said that there is no major outbreak of diseases in Miri as he had spoken to Miri Hospital director Dr Jack Wong over the matter.

He said the two directives involved separate incidents. The first directive was from Miri Hospital to deter children from going to a complex and another memo was to close a classroom in SK Miri.

Lee said the hospital memo was issued as a precaution as there have been an increase in a number of sick children.

"The children ward is full due to common ailments and the hospital does not want to see the infections spread.

"As for the case in SK Miri, the pupils of a class had been infected by hand, foot and mouth disease.

"The school had closed that class for the pupils to be treated," he added.

Lee said there were no fatalities or anyone in critical condition, adding that the public must take precautions to ensure good hygiene for children.
