PETALING JAYA: The water cut in Selangor has been extended further after a severe pipe burst at the SSP3 treatment plant seriously injured several staff members, said Syarikat Bekalan Air Sdn Bhd (Syabas).

“The repair work was completed at 5pm ahead of estimated time and the plant was about to start operations when the incident happened,” Syabas said in a statement soon after the incident.

The water cut was initially scheduled for four days starting yesterday. The statement did not mention how much longer it will take for water supply to resume.

“During the incident the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) representatives with several Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Puas) and Syarikat Pengeluar Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Splash) officers were on site.

“The incident caused serious injuries to the staff on site and Splash has informed SPAN and the department of occupational safety (DOSH).

“Following the incident, the supply restoration has been extended from the original schedule,” it added.

The public, it said, will be informed about the new recovery status soon and that relief water supply via water tankers will continue until supply is restored.

Meanwhile, the first day of scheduled water disruptions in the Klang Valley went by with minimal disruptions, with many households and businesses prepared for eventual dry taps.

Some business operators and residents who were on the list of affected districts were pleasantly surprised to find that they still had running taps yesterday.

Cherry Cake House in Section 1, Petaling Jaya, was pleased to find it had running water well into the afternoon.

The owner’s son, who wanted only to be known as Jerry, said they prepared many pails of water to continue baking buns and cakes, as well as to wash up.

Jerry said the family-run bakery experienced an unscheduled water cut last week that required bringing buckets of water from home.

“We had advance notice this time, so we are prepared,” he said.

Residents at Section 7, Petaling Jaya, also had not experienced any water disruptions despite being on the list of affected areas.

A resident who only wanted to be known as Pang said they still had water.

“We have a water tank, that should be sufficient for showering.

“We have also collected water in pails for washing dishes and cleaning,” said Pang.

Pang said her house also has a rainwater harvesting system that is used for watering plants.

Air Selangor head of customer relations and communications Abdul Raof Ahmad said customers may still have water supply despite being on the list of affected areas.

“This is due to the balance of water in some parts of the distribution system,” he said.

Over in Shah Alam, UiTM Shah Alam student Nabilah Superto said hostel denizens were unaffected.

She said they got their water from the UiTM main reservoir tank which could last them for up to two days, if used sparingly.
