SUNGAI PETANI: Sungai Petani MCA division secretary Ko Hung Weng is the party’s choice for the Bakar Arang state seat in the coming general election.

In announcing this, party president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said Ko’s humble and down-to-earth personality would serve the people well.

“I urge him to work hard and help the people, raise their aspirations and speak up for them.

“We are confident of wresting back the seat,” he said after meeting the division’s grassroots members at the operations centre in Taman Intan here yesterday.

Currently, the 52-year-old Ko is also a Sungai Petani municipal councillor.

When his name was announced, the members gave him a standing ovation.

In return, he nodded to express his gratitude and pledged to work hard to serve the people.

Earlier in his speech, Liow said the party was in high spirits and united to face GE14.

“MCA and the Chinese community are together, while the Opposition is in conflict, without consensus on certain pressing issues.

“The Government’s transformation programmes are on the right track in terms of economic growth and stability, which will be proven in a few years’ time,” he said.

Also present during the meeting were MCA vice-president and Kedah MCA chairman Datuk Lee Chee Leong, Penang MCA chairman Datuk Tan Teik Cheng, Sungai Petani MCA division chief Cheng Joo Chooi and division vice-chief Gan Hor Chye.

Later, Liow attended a dinner gathering of the Padang Serai MCA division at the South Kedah Chinese Recreation Club in Kulim.
