Azmin: Zaid must be held responsible over comments against Selangor Ruler

KLANG: DAP's Datuk Zaid Ibrahim must assume responsibility for what he said in regards to the Selangor Ruler, said Datuk Seri Azmin Ali (pic).

“He must be held responsible for what he had said,” the Selangor Mentri Besar told reporters after attending the investiture ceremony at Istana Alam Shah here in conjunction with Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah's 72nd birthday Monday (Dec 11).

The former de facto law minister had tweeted that Sultan Sharafuddin should be "careful" with his remarks as everyone would be affected if "the country burns".

Zaid was responding to Sultan Sharafuddin’s statement in an interview with The Star in which the Ruler said that former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad “will burn the whole country with his anger”.

On the rally held in support of the Selangor Ruler in Shah Alam on Sunday (Dec 10), Azmin said everyone had the right to assemble if it was done in a correct manner.

“This is a democratic society. Anyone can assemble and express their views. But it has to be conducted in a proper manner," he said.

The rally was participated by Barisan Nasional component parties and non-governmental organisations to record their support to Sultan Sharafuddin as well as criticise Dr Mahathir and Zaid for their impudence towards the Selangor Ruler.

Dr Mahathir had allegedly slurred against the Bugis community in his criticism against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Sultan Sharafuddin took offence to the statement and rebuked Dr Mahathir.

Earlier in his speech of allegiance to Sultan Sharafuddin, Azmin said the Malay Rulers are not merely symbols.

“The Malay Rulers' institution has an important role to guarantee the unity of the nation’s multi-racial and multi-religious society as well as defend its social contract," he added.
