Over 330 flood hotspots identified in Johor

JOHOR BARU: Johor has identified more than 330 flood hotspots as the state prepares for the north-east monsoon, says a state executive councillor.

Johor works, transport, infrastructure and communications committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh (pic) said three districts – Kota Tinggi, Batu Pahat and Segamat – will also be given focus as the hotspots involve highly populated areas.

“Out of the total 337 hotspots statewide, 105 locations are located in Batu Pahat, Kota Tinggi and Segamat.

“In Batu Pahat, there are 41 hotspots involving 21 roads followed by Kota Tinggi, where 35 hotspots have been identified, including 30 roads and Segamat’s 29 hotspots involving 16 roads,” he said after inspecting a flood wall project in Taman Rinting here yesterday.

In the past, the three districts have also experienced major flooding incidents, which displaced residents and caused roads to be cut off.

Mohamad Fazli said that according to the Meteorology Department, the north-east monsoon season started last week, while Johor is expecting large quantities of rain from this month until January next year.

He added that the state government would also apply for up to RM30mil from the Malaysian Road Records Information System (Marris) and the Drainage and Irrigation Department for the maintenance of public infrastructure in preparation for the floods.

“We will prioritise projects in highly populated areas and also keep close watch of the situation through technical agencies, local councils and related departments,” he said.
