Over 1,700 factory workers switch jobs

GEORGE TOWN: A total of 1,755 local manufacturing workers in Penang were recorded as undergoing career transitions this year, including 372 affected by business or divisional closures.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the 372 workers, representing 21.2% of the total, were affected by closures involving 48 manufacturing employers.

“The figures are based on the Social Security Organisation’s Employment Insurance System (EIS) records from January to Oct 9 this year,” he said.

On his recent trade and investment mission to the United States, Chow said the state had yet to determine the value of potential investments arising from the visit.

“The working visit was aimed at strengthening ties with American investors, encouraging the expansion of their operations in the state and attracting new investments,” he said.

Chow said foreign investment decisions often took several years, from initial discussions and site selection to negotiations and final commitments.
