Five dead in fire in Sungai Petani

SUNGAI PETANI: Five people were killed and one critically hurt in a fire that razed four houses in Kampung Sungai Gelugur, Taman Petani Jaya here.

A spokesman from the Fire and Rescue Department said that a team was dispatched to the scene after a distress call was received at 4.11am on Tuesday.

Fifty-five firemen from Sungai Petani, Tikam Batu, Bakar Arang and Padang Lembu were actively involved in the operation.

"As soon as the firefighters arrived, they saw four houses on fire.

"Five bodies were retrieved while one person is in critical condition after sustaining 70% burns," he said.

All the victims have been identified as Indonesian nationals.
