Melaka barrage to be left fully open

MELAKA: The barrage controlling the flow of water from Sungai Melaka to the Straits of Malacca will be opened to the maximum as the state anticipates unusual rain.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron said the move to release water to the sea was to accommodate the high volume of rainfall in the event of incessant rain.

“The floodwater gates at Batu Hampar and Durian Tunggal Dam will also be synchronised to function in tandem with the flow when we release the water from Sungai Melaka,” he said yesterday.

Floods in Melaka yesterday caused 374 people to be evacuated to three new centres in the Jasin and Alor Gajah districts.

Melaka Disaster Management Committee Secretariat head Effendy Ali said seven hours of heavy rain caused fresh floods in several areas in Jasin and Alor Gajah.

He said Kampung Tehel, Kampung Tersusun Seri Mendapat, Kampung Kilang Berapi and Kampung Tedong in Jasin and Kampung Seri Jeram and Kampung Bukit Balai in Alor Gajah were affected.
