IPOH: Police have smashed an armed robbery gang which preyed on 24-hour convenience stores in petrol stations.

The 27-year-old Rohingya refugee mastermind of the so-called “Geng Tangki” group was arrested on May 29, along with two other members in Manjoi near here.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Sum Chang Keong said police were hunting for another gang member, adding that at least three cases have been solved with the arrests.

The Rohingya, who was found with a UNHCR refugee card, has apparently been in the country since age six.

“We are verifying the card’s authenticity with the authority concerned,’’ ACP Sum said.

The gang would usually rob the stores for cash and cigarettes, he said.

Police seized two stolen motorcycles, several handphones, a sword, sickle, knife, axe and sticky tape which the gang members used to conceal their fingerprints, during the arrests.

They are looking for one Muhammad Shafiq Soleehin Yusny, 22, whose last known address is Plot 230499, RPT Sri Aman, Fasa 2, Menglembu, to help in the investigation.
