PETALING JAYA: Singer-songwriter Yuna has another feather in her cap – she is now the first Malaysian artiste to be nominated for a BET (Black Entertainment Television) award.
The 30-year-old Alor Setar-born Yuna, now based in Los Angeles, received a nomination for the BET Centric Award for Crush, her duet with Usher, from her latest album Chapters.
Yuna is up against Solange’s Cranes In The Sky, Mary J. Blige (Thick Of It), Fantasia (Sleeping With The One I Love), Kehlani (Distraction) and Syd’s All About Me.
The BET Awards is an annual awards ceremony by the BET network, which celebrates African Americans and other minorities in various fields of entertainment.
The Centric Award recognises neo soul and/or traditional R&B songs and videos. Previous winners have included the likes of Beyonce, The Weeknd and Common.
This year’s awards ceremony will take place on June 25 in the United States.
This is not the first time Yuna has made waves internationally.
Released in May last year, Chapters was voted as one of the 10 Best R&B Albums of the year by Billboard’s critics.
Crush also peaked at No.3 on the Billboard Adult R&B charts.
Another song of hers, On Ghost Ridge, made it to the 91-song long-list for the Best Original Song category in this year’s Oscars though it did not make the final cut of nominees.
