PETALING JAYA: The Kuala Gandah National Elephant Conservation Centre in Temerloh, Pahang, is closed until further notice because of flooding.
The Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) announced the temporary closure of tours and visitor activities at the centre in a statement yesterday.
The centre’s Elephant Unit head Nasaruddin Othman said Sungai Teris, which runs through the sanctuary, started to flood early on Tuesday, at around 5am.
“The water level rose to 1.2m, the highest it has risen since we opened back in 1990,” said Nasaruddin.
He said all the sanctuary’s elephants are safe and have been moved to higher ground.
As of yesterday evening, Nasaruddin said, the water had subsided and “everything is under control”.
The conservation centre is the base for the Elephant Unit, which began its elephant, now a critically endangered species, translocation programme in 1974 to save the animals from potential conflict with human settlements.
