KUALA KANGSAR: Five days after winning the by-election, newly-elected Kuala Kangsar MP Datin Mastura Mohd Yazid stepped foot into her late husband’s constituency service centre for the first time.

The wife of former Kuala Kangsar MP Datuk Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad entered the office at around 9.50am Thursday and was accompanied by her eldest son Wan Emir Astar, 26.

Upon arrival, she met Bukit Chandan assemblyman Maslin Sham Razman to discuss her itinerary for the day.

“I’m very excited to do my work as a parliamentarian for the people of Kuale (Kuala Kangsar). I have to work hard because there are many projects and plans to fulfil,” she told reporters in a press conference at the service centre on Thursday.

Mastura said she had wanted to go to the service centre on Monday but the office was closed because the staff was allowed a short break following the by-election.

“This is my first day in office. I’m humbled because these are the steps leading to my husband’s office.

“It’s a huge responsibility for me. It’s going to be a long journey to serve the people of Kuale. Perak Mufti has given me some guidelines on how to serve my constituents during Iddah (the waiting period following the death of a Muslim woman’s husband).

“If I need to serve, I’m allowed. But when it comes to celebratory functions, I’m not allowed.”

Barisan Nasional retained the Kuala Kangsar parliament seat with a bigger majority of 6,969 compared to the 1,082 votes recorded in the 13th General Election.

Mastura received 12,653 votes defeating PAS Candidate Dr Najihatussalehah Ahmad who got 5,684 votes.

Amanah’s Dr Ahmad Termizi Ramli received 4,883 votes while independent Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary received a paltry 54.
