He wasn’t a teacher, says British Council

PETALING JAYA: The British Council has no record of paedophile Richard Huckle being engaged as a teacher in Malaysia after he completed the Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (Celta) in 2008.

A spokesman said Huckle completed the course which provides training to individuals to teach adult learners.

“Following the course, we have no record to indicate he was ever engaged as a teacher in Malaysia with us, either for adult students or children,” said the spokesman in a statement.

It was reported that Huckle took the teacher training course at the British Council’s offices in Kuala Lumpur. He also appeared in a promotional video.

British Council Global director of communications Sao Bui Van confirmed that Huckle was part of a 2008 promotional video, but it had since been removed from YouTube.

Sao stressed that at no point in his time studying at the council did Huckle have any contact with children.

The Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan University College has verified that Huckle did indeed enrol for a Diploma in Information Technology and achieved a CGPA of 3.51 in June 2011.

He was later declared as “missing in action” by the institution.
