Dr Ling: PAS’ Bill not suitable for multiracial Malaysia

KAJANG: The introduction of the  Private Member’s Bill by PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang in a multiracial country like Malaysia is wrong, said Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik.

“You can’t impose your views on everyone,” the former MCA president told reporters at the 12th Malaysia Festival of the Mind competitions 2016 at the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Sungai Long campus here Friday.

In this regard, Dr Ling said he was in agreement with MCA, MIC and Gerakan’s decision to jointly oppose the Private Member’s Bill, saying it was the right thing to do at the right time.

On MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and Gerakan president Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong’s announcement that they would quit the Cabinet if the Bill was passed in Parliament, Dr Ling said regardless of what they said, the attempt to bulldoze the Bill was wrong as everyone’s view on the matter should be respected.

The 12th Malaysia Festival of the Mind competitions 2016 are organised by the Malaysian Mental Literacy Movement (MMLM) together with UTAR and Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TARUC).

It will be held on July 16 and 17 at UTAR’s Kampar campus in Perak, and on July 23 and 24 at TARUC’s Penang campus.

As for Selangor, the event will be held in conjunction with the Kuala Lumpur Engineering Science Fair from Nov 4 to 6 at the Mines International Exhibition and Convention Centre.

Dr Ling, who is the MMLM chairman, said he hopes the festival and competitions would encourage more people to be involved in these games in order to sharpen their mental abilities.

Admission to the festival, talks and workshops is free, with more information at www.utar.edu.my/mmlm.
