Total wreck: Passers-by looking at the badly damaged vehicle after the accident in Likas.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah footballer Rozaimi Abdul Rahman has been seriously injured in an accident in which his nephew died.

The 23-year-old Sabah striker and his nephew, former Under-19 state footballer Awangku Mohd Farris Mahamud, 21, were earlier warded at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital intensive care unit after the 1.30pm mishap yesterday.

Awangku died later last night.

Farris was believed to be the one driving the car, which skidded and crashed into a tree and the gate of a house near the SJK (C) Shan Tao in Likas near here.

City police chief Asst Comm M. Chandra said initial investigations showed that the duo were headed towards Kota Kinabalu.

He said the driver had lost control of the vehicle upon reaching the stretch of road, causing it to swerve to the left lane, hit a tree and an electric pole before smashing into the metal gate of a nearby house.

Rozaimi played for Sarawak, Selangor and Harimau Muda A before joining Sabah.

He made his international debut against Sri Lanka in 2012 and made his name as top scorer for the Asian Cup qualification tournament when he scored 10 goals in five appearances in the 2013 AFC U-22 competition.
