PETALING JAYA: The Kampung Baru mosque redevelopment project is not new and was started in 2011, clarified 1Malaysia Development Berhad.

In a statement Monday, 1MDB said the project was first announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak during his visit to Kampung Baru on Feb 5 that year.

“Construction work commenced in 2012, to transform the mosque into a vibrant community for Kampung Baru residents,” it said.

The company said the redevelopment was one of its many corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities undertaken by its foundation, Yayasan 1MDB.

“Yayasan 1MDB has contributed RM20mil towards the mosque redevelopment project form its inception in 2011 to the present day.

“1MDB regrets that various parties have resorted to using the mosque redevelopment project to serve their own agendas,” it said.

It added the project was scheduled for full completion by end of July, and the mosque will “serve as a key catalyst” for the planned development of Kampung Baru.

Last Saturday, Najib said it was unfair for 1MDB to be criticised by people who refused to recognise the company’s contributions to society.

He cited the Kampung Baru mosque project which 1MDB had donated RM20mil to as an example.
