Malaysian woman caught smuggling six gold bars into Dhaka Airport

NEW DELHI: A Malaysian woman was detained by enforcement officers at the Dhaka Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Bangladesh for attempting to smuggle six gold bars into the country, according to a report.

Bangladesh news portal bdnews24.com reported that the 53-year-old woman was detained when she attempted to go through the green channel at the airport on Tuesday.

According to the report, she attracted suspicion by the way she walked, which led officers to frisk her, uncovering six gold bars weighing 1kg hidden on her person.

Armed Police Battalion's assistant superintendent Nur-e Alam Siddique was quoted as saying that the woman came to Bangladesh on a Malaysia Airlines flight at about 11am.

"She had never been to Bangladesh before, according to the travel details on her passport. She was also not fluent in English, so we could not ascertain her destination in Bangladesh," he said.

Legal action is being taken against her, the reports said, quoting customs assistant commissioner Jewela Khanam. - Bernama
