Myanmar national happy after court acquits him of killing wife

GEORGE TOWN: A Myanmar national was acquitted and discharged of murdering his wife two years ago by a High Court here on Monday.

Judicial Commissioner Wong Teck Meng in acquitting Maung Soe, 32 of the murder charge, ruled that the defence had succeeded in raising a reasonable doubt against the prosecution's case.

Maung was alleged to have murdered his wife Hema, between 11pm on May 26, 2012 and 7.30pm on May 27, 2012, at their house in Kg Main Road Perai in central Seberang Prai.

The offence under Section 302 of the Penal Code carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

Maung, who was wearing a blue shirt, smiled when the judgment was read out.

He also hugged his counsel E. Gnasegaran after he was led out of the courtroom. DPP Muna Mohamed Jaafar prosecuted the case.
