BATU PAHAT: The fight for PKR presidency between party heavyweights Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail must seem a laughing stock for the whole world, said MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong.

He added that never in the history of Malaysian politics has there been a such a fight between husband and wife for a party’s top post.

“I do not see how that helps in their pursuit for a more democratic nation and how that can help the democracy in Malaysia.

“This was beyond my imagination and I’m sure that I am not the only person who feels amused by their move,” he said in a press conference here after attending a meet-and-greet session with Universiti Tun Hussein Onn staff here yesterday.

Dr Wee added that the husband-and-wife fight could “make it into the Malaysia Book of Records for being an unprecedented move in the political arena”.

On Saturday, Anwar filed his nomination papers at 11am via his representative to contest for the post.

Wan Azizah’s nomination was only officially announced when the deadline was closed at 5pm.

On a different matter, Dr Wee said there were positive signs in terms of Chinese votes in the recent Kajang and Balingian by-elections as there was an increase in Barisan Nasional votes in Chinese-majority areas.

“However, we cannot be complacent or contented with this as there is still a lot of room for improvement especially for the MCA grassroots to ensure that we remain relevant and solve issues faced by the people,” Dr Wee added.
