Malacca to start water rationing after Mar 29 if dry spell continues

ALOR GAJAH: Malacca will only implement water rationing after March 29 if the dry weather continues.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron said the water levels at Durian Tunggal Dam in Alor Gajah; Jus and Asahan Dams in Jasin could still cater for the needs of the consumers in the state.

He said the water level at the Durian Tunggal Dam was at 65.2 per cent, Jus (61.8 per cent) and Asahan (76.1 per cent).

"The water level at the dam gives us an assurance that we can sustain until March 29 without rain," he told reporters after visiting the Durian Tunggal Dam.

He said the state government would channel raw water from several retention ponds besides water from the Sungai Muar and Gerisik, Johor to enable the state to supply 105 million gallons of water per day to consumers.

Idris said the state government planned to create tube wells in each of the 28 state constituency areas in preparation to face the drought in future.

He said Malacca had contingency plans that could sustain supply for three months in case of a drought.

"With the construction of the tube wells, we expect to be able to sustain water supply for up to six months during the drought season," he added. - Bernama
