School to probe incident leading to boy's suicide

KAJANG: Authorities of the school where a boy was allegedly driven to suicide by bullies have pledged to investigate the case and take action against any culprit.

Sambhasivam Doraisamy, a family friend of T. Kavinraj, who died on Saturday, said the school had been unaware of the boy’s plight.

“He had told me that he complained to the disciplinary teacher about it two weeks ago but actually he did not do so.

“The teachers did not know who the bullies were. No one said anything about it,” said Sambhasivam, 49.

“Only he knew who they were and he’s gone now. But the school promised they would investigate and take action against them. I’m satisfied with that,” he told reporters yesterday after a meeting with the school headmistress.

Kavinraj, who was a school prefect, had consumed insecticide and died at a clinic later. He had apparently often came home crying, telling Sambhasivam that several boys had taunted him.

Sambhasivam, who works as a lorry driver, said the family had lodged a report at the Kajang police station yesterday.

Befrienders Kuala Lumpur chairperson Mary Raj said parents should be communicating with their children and always take what they say seriously.

“They should say ‘bullying happens and if you have been bullied, I want you to come and tell me’. They need to create an environment where their child can be comfortable communicating their feelings and problems to them,” she said.
