Parliament: Simpang Renggam MP Liang firm on Anwar's overseas accounts

KUALA LUMPUR: Simpang Renggam MP Liang Teck Meng, who revealed that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has 20 offshore accounts, stands firm on his claims against the Opposition Leader.

He told the Dewan Rakyat the information on the Permatang Pauh's offshore accounts, of which nine are allegedly in the Israel National Bank, were available on the Internet.

Liang said he had raised the matter in the House because it involves national security, claiming there were signs of attempts by foreign powers to interfere in the country's politics.

"I want the government to investigate the matter. This is an important and serious issue as it involves the sovereignty of the country.

"I will only apologise if investigations by authorities conclude that there are no outside attempts to interfere.

"But if there is proof (of this), the culprit must be punished for being a traitor to the country," he said.

On Tuesday, Liang had claimed that Anwar has some 20 offshore bank accounts with amounts of more than US$66mil (RM209mil) and S$49mil (RM123mil).

Anwar has refuted the allegation, saying that no such information was available in Wikileaks.

The Opposition leader has asked Liang to explain his allegations or repeat it outside the House so that he could sue the Barisan Nasional lawmaker.
