PETALING JAYA: Korean megastar Psy may be famous worldwide, but PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat has mistaken him for a female performer, urging him to cover his aurat (parts of body not allowed to be seen according to Islam).
According to Sin Chew Daily, Nik Aziz made that remark when reporters asked him to comment on the fact that Barisan Nasional had invited Psy to perform at its Chinese New Year open house in Penang on Feb 11.
Hearing that Psy is a Korean singer, Nik Aziz said female artistes must tutup aurat when they perform.
Otherwise it would have a negative influence on youths in the audience, he was quoted as saying.
When it was pointed out that Psy was actually a man, Nik Aziz then expressed concern over the content of his songs, noting that it was important to ensure that songs were suitable for youths.
The Kelantan Mentri Besar also asked reporters “in what language does he sing?”.
When told that Psy sings in Korean, Nik Aziz said he wondered why people would want to listen to people singing songs in a language that they did not understand.
He also said it was extravagant for the organiser to invite Psy when the money could instead be used to promote local artistes.
“Don't we have many local singers? Why don't we hire local youths? It is a waste of money to hire foreign singers. Isn't is better to spend the money on our youths?” he asked.
Meanwhile, organising chairman Oh Tong Keong said the organisers would not stop anyone wearing red, yellow or green from attending the function as Barisan is promoting unity following calls by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng for the public to attend the event clad only in red, green or yellow.
“This is a Chinese New Year celebration and not a political event. We invite everyone to come and join in the fun,” Oh told the press yesterday.
Oh said invitations had already been sent out to Lim and all the state assemblymen on Monday. “However, he (Lim) has yet to confirm his attendance.”
