BANGI: Rural and Regional Development Ministry has plans to build 5,962 houses and repair existing 3,454 houses this year.
Its Minister Datuk Seri Mohd. Shafie Apdal said the ministry had constructed 548 houses and repaired 531 houses in the second quarter of the year under the GTP’s Rural Basic Infrastructure NKRA.
Shafie said RM300mil has been allocated to the ministry to carry out the construction and restoration works.
He added that the government has decided to focus on restoring existing houses over construction of new ones.
And due to the limited funds, Shafie said repairing houses allowed the government to reach out to more people. He also pointed out that the decision would benefit people in the rural areas as many of their homes were in dire need of repair.
Each house is allocated RM12,000 for restoration works such as roof and drainage repairs, structural reinforcements and repainting.
The total number of houses slated for repair works consisted of 1,618 houses in the peninsula, 2,345 in Sabah and 1,999 in Sarawak.
