SEOUL: Taking a leaf from the success story of the animation and content industry in South Korea, Malaysia will set up its own MSC Malaysia Animation Centre in Cyberjaya, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said yesterday.
The Deputy Prime Minister said the setting-up of the centre by the Malaysian Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) would involve the upgrading of the existing Creative Application and Development Centre.
He said Malaysia wanted to develop its animation and content industry and would emulate South Korea’s success which had its humble beginning in the 1970s. It later helped in the production of Japanese anime and some episodes of American cartoon series.
Najib said Malaysia was not short of creative talents, capability or ideas.
“The Lat cartoon series Kampung Boy is a wonderful theme for a Malaysian animation work to market overseas.
“We can do it with Lat if we can do it with Saladin,” he said, referring to the animated series produced by MDeC that won the award for Best Technology at the Seoul International Cartoon Animation Festival last year.
Earlier while visiting the Seoul Animation Centre (SAC), Najib witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between MDeC and the Korean Culture and Content Agency, and between MDeC and the SAC.
